Laurie Smith’s Paddy Power is Pick of the Day on David Reviews
This deft piece of advertising for Paddy Power reminds DAVID of ‘Extras’ – the excellent comedy series co-created by Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais. Sid Owen plays a washed-up version of himself in a fashion reminiscent of ‘Extras’ regular Shaun Williamson (aka Barry from EastEnders). Like his fellow Albert Square alumnus, Owen’s performance skirts dangerously close to the truth, giving it an edge which amplifies the cringe-factor in a manner which makes it hard to look away. But he still has his dignity and – referring to himself in the third-person – he makes it very clear that he’s not willing to play the back half of the pantomime horse.
Director Laurie Smith – who recently joined Merman – cut his teeth working on ITV Creative’s trails, and is responsible for a number of the excellent trails for BT Sport’s output. In this other strand of his work, Laurie has often had to contend with non-actors like Michael Owen and Jake Humphrey, so coaxing the right performance out of Sid Owen must have been a breath of fresh air. Even so, he pulls it of with aplomb and we look forward to seeing more of his work.
